Devil Due The Thomas Caine Series Book 0 (Audible Audio Edition) Andrew Warren Bryan L Anderson Andrew Warren Books Books

I found this book while searching Amazon and it looked promising. I downloaded it and read it in one sitting. The main character, Thomas Caine is a complex individual and the author does a fantastic job of providing us with an interesting plot as well. The setting is SE Asia and a welcome change from the Middle East/Mexico locations seemingly used for most recent books. I enjoyed the book so much that I purchased the next book in the series, Tokyo Black. Well done, Mr. Warren!

Devil Due The Thomas Caine Series Book 0 (Audible Audio Edition) Andrew Warren Bryan L Anderson Andrew Warren Books Books Reviews

The author grabbed me at the preview. Good guy gone bad, trying to do a good deed. Trouble you already know I'll follow. I really liked the character Caine. Mr. Warren did a great job selling him to me.
Do not understand why Caine is placed in Asian areas. Both the short story and Tokyo Black are in an area unfamiliar and uninteresting to me. I skimmed thru all of that description to get to the 'meat'. So bravo for the story, but let's get Caine out of those far East areas.
Thailand lore is steeped in the supernatural, especially devils. One only has to look at the prevalence of distorted devil masks in national feasts to gather this truth. And when a fiendish real life Burmese legend crosses the path of an erstwhile assassin turned small time smuggler, Caine, it does not take much to figure out there will be the devil to pay.
A novela, Andrew Warren packs a lot of action into this fast moving thriller set in the exotic locale of Pattaya, Thailand. A great introduction to a new if slightly damaged crusader for the underdog. Enjoy.
This novella is an action oriented story with very little character development. Thomas Caine is another action hero in the style of Jack Reacher or Jack Bauer. However, without any background or personal information, it is hard for me to care about a character who seems to possess very little wit or charisma.

There were some typos and/or grammatical errors but the most annoying thing to me was the stilted dialogue used when conversations were with characters whose main language was other than English. It could have been written to flow more smoothly.

If someone is looking for a quick, action packed story with a lot of violence and heroics, this novella fits the bill.
Here I am again, in this contrary position of not liking a popular book. But I have to be honest, and I really didn't enjoy the story. Here's why

Chapter 1 is from the perspective of a character called Sarah. It's a bit of a love story between her and Guenther, as they stroll the marketplace in Thailand. Around them, we see the tension and problems dwelling in dark corners. Then that chapter ends with a punch, and Sarah and Guenther's story is finished. Much later in the book, there is a vague reference to the occurrence that day in the marketplace, but Sarah, Guenther, and their personal stories are irrelevant. So why open the book with this couple at all?

The book reads more like a screenplay than a novel. In fact, it would make a great TV show or movie, but it did little for me as a reading experience. The story is high-octane action. The problem with this, for me, is the action reads like a step-by-step playbook. Caine is a killing machine, and we go from one fight to another, with long, overly detailed scenes.

While high on action, the story is quite light on character development and emotion. We're constantly in the midst of chaos. Women are being kidnapped and abused. People are beaten and viciously murdered. But I didn't feel a thing from the characters, and so none of it mattered to me.

In the end, despite all the blood and gore, neither the story nor the characters left much of an impression.
You can not help but love the character of Thomas Caine former CIA assassin who was betrayed by his handler that got his partner killed and him in hiding out in Thailand. Caine keeps to himself to not draw any attention to himself but when a bar girl friend of his is kidnapped then hr brings on his skills and all hell rains down. If you like tons of action this is definitely the book for you. This book is packed full of good action that you will enjoy, read for yourself and you will learn what I mean.

Truly enjoyed listening. Thanks for providing the audiobook for review!

I must mention that my first review for this title was lost somehow in Audible la la land.

This book has it all. First and foremost it's beautifully written. The story line is fast paced and holds the readers interest from beginning to end. The characters are authentic to the story, totally realistic, and interact with one another in a smooth and unforced way. I read this in two sittings, finishing at 300 A.M. I couldn't go to sleep before finding out the ending of this story.
